Here are some helpful suggestions for keep you home warm and safe throughout this holiday season:

1. Insulate Your Home

  • Seal Drafts: Check for drafts around windows, doors, and vents. Use weatherstripping or caulk to seal any gaps. Consider draft blockers for doors.

  • Insulate Attic & Walls: Proper insulation in the attic and walls prevents heat from escaping and cold from entering. If you live in an older home, this may be especially important.

  • Use Thermal Curtains: Install heavy, thermal curtains on windows to reduce heat loss during the night and maintain warmth during the day.

2. Efficient Heating

  • Check Heating System: Ensure your heating system (whether it’s a furnace, heat pump, or space heaters) is in good working condition before cold weather arrives. Replace filters regularly to ensure airflow.

  • Use Space Heaters Wisely: If using space heaters, ensure they are placed in safe locations away from flammable objects and never leave them unattended.

  • Zone Heating: Use space heaters or smaller heating units in rooms you use the most, rather than heating the entire house.

3. Warm Bedding & Layers

  • Layer Up: Wear warm clothing, such as thermal socks, hats, and gloves indoors. Layering your clothes helps trap heat close to your body.

  • Flannel Sheets and Blankets: Swap out your regular bedding for flannel sheets and thicker blankets. Use an electric blanket for added warmth at night.

4. Create a Cozy Atmosphere

  • Warm Lighting: Use candles (safely) to create a warm ambiance. Dim, soft lighting can make your space feel cozier.

  • Area Rugs: Adding rugs to cold floors (especially hardwood or tile) helps retain warmth and makes walking barefoot more comfortable.

5. Fire Safety and Prevention

  • Chimney Inspection: If you use a fireplace, have the chimney inspected and cleaned regularly to prevent blockages or creosote buildup, which can lead to dangerous fires.

  • Space Heater Safety: Place space heaters on a flat, stable surface, away from furniture, and keep them at least 3 feet from anything flammable.

  • Fire Extinguishers: Keep fire extinguishers near heat sources (fireplace, kitchen, space heaters) and ensure they are easy to access.

  • Carbon Monoxide Detectors: If using a gas heater, stove, or fireplace, make sure carbon monoxide detectors are installed and functional. This is especially important if you use space heaters or other non-electric heat sources.

6. Emergency Preparedness

  • Stock Up on Essentials: Have extra blankets, warm clothes, bottled water, and non-perishable food items in case of power outages. Keep a first-aid kit and flashlight readily available.

  • Backup Power: If you’re in an area prone to power outages, consider investing in a backup power source like a generator. Ensure it’s installed safely and that you know how to use it.

  • Battery-Operated Heaters: If you can’t use electric space heaters during a power outage, consider investing in a battery-operated or kerosene heater as an emergency backup.

7. Safe Heating Alternatives

  • Heated Mats or Pads: If you’re using a space heater, consider using heated mats or pads under your feet or around your chair for localized warmth.

  • Humidify the Air: Use a humidifier to add moisture to dry winter air, making your environment feel warmer and more comfortable.

8. Keep Pipes from Freezing

  • Insulate Pipes: Pipe insulation helps prevent water from freezing. Pay special attention to pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics, and garages.

  • Drip Faucets: During extreme cold, let faucets drip slowly to keep water moving through the pipes. This reduces the risk of freezing.

By following these tips, you can keep your home warm and safe throughout the winter months, making it a comfortable and secure place during cold and snowy days.
